How to get Apple Health data into Home Assistant

Home Assistant’s own app can now share some Apple Health data, but it can’t send it reliably and regularly. Here are the main ways to get your data in, who each one suits, and how to set up the most complete option.

The short answer

Use an iPhone app that sends Apple Health to Home Assistant

Apple Health data lives only on your iPhone and Apple Watch, so an iPhone app has to send it to Home Assistant. Which app is best depends on how much you need:

  • A few everyday readings: the official Home Assistant app’s Apple Health sensors are free and built in.
  • Every reading, history, workouts and more: Health Assistant Link, with the free Health Bridge integration, is built only for Home Assistant. It keeps each reading’s original time, backfills up to 14 days, and adds workouts, medications and two-way sync.
  • Exporting to many places: Health Auto Export sends health data to cloud drives, databases and other services, with Home Assistant as one destination.

With the subscription, Health Assistant Link keeps Home Assistant up to date automatically, about every 30 minutes, day and night. If a sync is missed, short gaps fill themselves in on the next one, so your history stays complete, and you can backfill up to 14 days any time. Add the Apple Watch app and its complication to your watch face to keep heart rate and sleep flowing overnight while your iPhone is locked.

Your options

Three common ways to do it

Official Home Assistant app

Turn on Apple Health sensors in the Home Assistant app’s sensor settings. You get about 30 everyday metrics, such as heart rate, weight and last night’s sleep, each showing its latest value. It’s free and needs nothing extra installed.

Health Assistant Link

An iPhone and Apple Watch app with the Health Bridge integration, built only for Home Assistant. It sends 90+ metrics with their original times, backfills history, and adds a sleep stage timeline, workouts, medications, dashboard cards and two-way sync.

Health Auto Export

A general export app for cloud drives, REST APIs, MQTT, email and Home Assistant. Its Home Assistant export sends health metrics as sensor states. It suits people sending data to several places.

Setup

Set up Health Assistant Link in four steps

  1. 1
    Install the Health Bridge integration

Add Health Bridge from HACS, the Home Assistant Community Store, then restart Home Assistant.

  2. 2
Install the iPhone and Apple Watch app

Download Health Assistant Link from the App Store and allow access to the Apple Health data you want to share.

  3. 3
Connect the app to Home Assistant

Add the Health Bridge integration in Home Assistant, choose a secret token, and enter your Home Assistant URL and the same token in the app. The full setup guide walks through each screen.

  4. 4
Choose your data and use it

Pick the metrics to sync. They appear as entities such as sensor.steps_yourname, ready for dashboards and automations. Add the built-in Health Bridge cards or copy a dashboard tile for a quick start.

Reliable syncing

Keep your data complete and current

iOS limits what any app can read while your iPhone is locked, and how often it can run in the background. A few settings make a big difference:

  • Turn on backfill so gaps fill in automatically with each reading’s original time.
  • Install the Apple Watch app to keep data flowing while your iPhone is locked.
  • Use your external Home Assistant URL so syncs work away from home.
  • Add a Lock Screen or Home Screen widget, which gives iOS another chance to sync.

FAQ

Common questions

Can the Home Assistant app read Apple Health?

Partly. The official Home Assistant app can now share about 30 everyday Apple Health metrics as sensors, each showing its latest value, but it can’t send them reliably and regularly. For every reading with its original time, history backfill, workouts, medications and two-way sync, use a dedicated app such as Health Assistant Link.

Is there a free way to get Apple Health data into Home Assistant?

Yes. The official Home Assistant app's Apple Health sensors are free. Health Assistant Link is also free to download and sync manually; automatic background syncing is an optional subscription.

Does my health data go through the cloud?

Not with Health Assistant Link. Data travels directly from your iPhone to your own Home Assistant, with no account, third-party server or cloud storage.

Can I see history and graphs of my health data?

Yes. Home Assistant records each value it receives. Health Assistant Link sends readings with their original Apple Health time, at up to 30-second detail for the last two hours, and can backfill up to 14 days of missing history, so graphs follow what actually happened.

Does it sync automatically in the background?

With the Health Assistant Link subscription, yes. Syncing runs automatically in the background, day and night, and the Apple Watch app, Home Screen widgets and iOS Shortcuts add more ways to keep data flowing, including while your iPhone is locked when the Apple Watch app is paired.

Can I send Home Assistant data to Apple Health?

Yes, with Health Assistant Link. You can pair a numeric Home Assistant entity, such as a smart scale's weight, with a writable Apple Health metric.
